CONTRIBUTORS AND CREDITS
PROJECT PARTNERS
University of Chichester
has a history of teacher training and now
offers a full range of degrees. They have a long-standing commitment to
equal opportunities, and provide a base for Professor Chris Gaine, BRITKID's
author. He has focused on young people's racial attitudes for over 25 years,
writing books and training materials and giving talks and training all over
the UK and Europe. With Comic Relief, Chris Gaine developed the Britkid
concept and was the recipient of the EU funding that provided some initial financial support to the site. He can be contacted at c.gaine@chi.ac.uk
Comic Relief
is famous for Red Nose Day, the mega-fundraising event that
sweeps the UK every two years. They also make grants to projects in the UK
and Africa supporting disadvantaged people. As part of its education
programme, Comic Relief has co-ordinated and publicised BRITKID, and
provided financial support to the site.
1997 was designated European Year Against Racism by the member states of the
European Union. Countries across Europe worked together on combating racism,
promoting good practice, communicating the message of tolerance, respect and
understanding, and highlighting the benefits of a diverse society. BRITKID
received funding from the European Union as part of its activities for the
European Year Against Racism.
ChildLine
is the free national helpline for children in trouble or danger.
On monitoring calls made to them during 1995, they identified racism and
bullying as a concern for a significant amount of callers, and in response
published a study outlining the key issues facing these young people. They
remain committed to addressing racism in their activities, and were an
associate partner for BRITKID, helping to edit the site's content from the
perspective of young people's experience, and involving schools from their
CHIPS (ChildLine in Partnership with Schools) programme in piloting the
original site in 1998.
The Runnymede Trust
is a registered charity which addresses itself
specifically to the development of a multi-ethnic society, especially by
offering advice to policy bodies. They are also involved in initiatives to
equality for minority ethnic youth in education. They see BRITKID as a way
to directly engage young people in fighting racial discrimination, and have
provided feedback on the site's content. They also provided funding and support for the new additions to the site in the 2006 edition, reflecting new patterns of immigration and diversity since the original material was written.
