SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD & KICK RACISM OUT OF FOOTBALL

All the big organisations in football are trying to stamp out racism in the game - the players' union (the PFA), the Football Supporters' Association, the FA, the Premier League, the League Managers' Association and the Football League.

The Commission for Racial Equality teamed up with a number of organisations and set up the Kick it Out campaign in 1993. They now have a week of action every year.
There's also a linked organisation called Football Against Racism in Europe.

Check out Kick it Out's website: www.kickitout.org

Show Racism the Red Card features Shola Ameobi, Thierry Henry, Ashley Cole, Robbie Keane, Gary Lineker, Joe Cole and Jose Mourinho amongst many others. There are loads of resources and information, aimed at a wide age range. Their website is great, with quotes from players and updates on the news about racism, anti-racism and football: www.srtrc.org

25% of professionals are now from African-Caribbean roots. People are now aiming at getting more Asian professionals and more black managers, coaches and referees.

Here are some things clubs can aim to do and which supporters can press for:

  • put an anti-racist statement in all programmes
  • take action against racist chanting
  • make public statements condemning racist chanting
  • refuse to sell season tickets to anyone who's been involved in racist activity
  • stop the distribution of racist leaflets etc at grounds
  • discipline players who use racist insults on the pitch
  • have supporters hotlines to report racist incidents
  • remove racist graffiti as soon as it appears
  • support a stronger law to outlaw individuals shouting racist abuse
Most of the Premier League clubs are already doing several of these things.
