Something personal about Saidi, the Moroccan waiter
I quite like working here. Though the wages are pretty low compared with other jobs, they are higher than I’d get back home in Morocco.
Well, I say ‘back home’ but actually I haven’t been there for years. I lived in France for ten years. There are lots of Moroccans there because France used to rule Morocco, like Britain used to rule India.
Have you ever noticed how many immigrants work in places like fast foods and stuff like that? It’s cos the wages are low and you have to work early in the morning and late at night. If you’ve got a better choice it’s probably not the kind of work you’d want to do. I’ve tried to get better jobs, but I think people discriminate against me. You can’t really tell for sure, that’s the trouble, but I have good qualifications from my school in France, and I speak and write three languages (French, English and Arabic).
Of course it doesn’t help these days looking like I might be a Muslim – which I am, actually. Even getting on the bus people give me funny looks.
