First they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the communists, and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for trade unionists, and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the homosexuals, and I didn't speak up,
because I wasn't a homosexual.
Then they came for me,
but by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.
Attributed to Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945.
Pastor Niemoller, a German submarine commander in WW1, opposed Hitler and was imprisoned. But if others had stood up as well, maybe things would have been different?
Here's some things you might think about doing. Please make a promise and see if you can keep it...
- I will get my school to have clear rules that everyone knows outlaw racial bullying and harassment.
- I will watch what I say about 'race' when I lose my temper.
- If someone is being racially harassed, I will report it to my teacher, the police or the local Racial Equality Council. The numbers are in the phone book!
