Something for politicians to sort out?
Nat: So you were saying, the workers here are doing new jobs, they aren’t taking jobs away from anyone British?
Manager: Exactly. Anyone who thinks that is just ignorant. Since the EU took in new countries...
David: Er.. Lathua and all of that...?
Manager: Dear me, I didn't think you had come for a geography lesson. There's no such country as Lathua. You mean Latvia, then there's Lithuania, Estonia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia. That's six. Two more anyone? the two biggest ones?
Tzu Lee: Hungary and Poland.
Manager: Right. And don't forget two small islands in the Mediterranean....?
Nat: Er... Cyprus?
Manager: Yeah, and Malta. Anyway, in the past few years the number of new jobs in Britain has gone up by maybe half a million. These are new jobs, right, so if we just count the number of British people, it’s obvious we are short of workers.
Nat: Just like we were in the 1950s when my Gran came over….
Manager: I suppose so…. Anyway, these workers send money back to Poland and so on, but they also spend money here. They buy cars, they buy food and drink, other stuff like clothes. This all brings money to local people, so those that bang on about it being a problem ought to think a bit more before they open their mouths.
David: So are you saying there’s no down side to there being lots of new immigrants?
Manager: Well look, I’m not the government. I just understand what I know about. It seems to me these workers are mostly educated, hard working, law abiding. They’re benefiting their own countries, supporting their families back there, a lot of them, and they spend money here. Everyone benefits as far as I can see. What’s not to like?
Tzu Lee: People say things like there aren’t enough schools and hospitals for our own people…
Manager: But almost none of my young workers have got children, so schools are hardly affected. And they’re a healthy lot too. It’s children and older people that cost money in the health service, not fit young people in their 20s.
Tzu Lee: Yeah but that’s now, what about in 10 years time?
Manager: That’s for the politicians to sort out, not me.
Tzu Lee: But you’re responsible for bringing them over here….
Manager: And the rest of the population is responsible for willingly buying the good quality farm products they grow. The things these foreign workers produce don’t appear by magic…..
