'What's the big deal with racist jokes?'

John: You know yesterday was the first time I'd been round your house. Your old man seems really nice.

Megan: Oh yeah, excuse him. Parents can be so embarrassing sometimes...

John: But you being Welsh Megan... I expected to see lots of pictures of sheep and stuff...

Mumtaz: John, don't be stupid

John: Oh come on Taz - I was only joking. I wasn't being racist... I wasn't talking about colour or anything. I know that'd be out of order.

Megan: Well, it never bothered me much in Wales. People used to call me names and say 'It's only a joke'. But I had good mates and they sort of made it seem unimportant. But I'm telling you, it would have been really tough if no-one had stuck up for me.

Mumtaz: It bugs me though. There's these so-called jokes about Asian shopkeepers. I just don't find it amusing. It makes you feel ashamed of what you are.

John: Don't you think it might make racism, like, less serious though, I mean, if we all have a laugh about it .....

Mumtaz: No way. Racist jokes aren't ordinary jokes - it all contributes to harassment, doesn't it? No one ever got a brick through their window because they've got big ears! Would David think jokes about concentration camps are funny?

John: No, but that's different innit. I mean that would be sick.

Mumtaz: Is it really any different?
